Win tickets to The Ugliest Woman in the World/All I Want is One Night at Hope Mill Theatre
Northern Soul has teamed up with the Watershed Productions to offer readers the chance to win a pair of tickets to not one, but two brilliant plays showing at Manchester’s Hope Mill Theatre at the beginning of July.
First up, there’s a daring production of The Ugliest Woman in the World, performed in complete darkness (and not for the faint-hearted). This terrible, tender play tells the true story of a 19th Century South American Indian who was sold by her family to Theodore Lent, the owner of a travelling freak show, and billed her as “The Ugliest Woman in The World”; and how he continued to exploit her even after her untimely death at the height of her fame.
Next, is All I Want is One Night. Set in the heady atmosphere of 1930s Paris, Suzy Solidor thrilled audiences with her performances of erotic lesbian songs. Painted or photographed by everybody from Man Ray to Bacon, she sang surrounded by her 225 portraits. This intimate show will transport you back to a night in her club at the height of her career. During an increasingly whisky-fuelled evening, as Suzy regales the audience with her most famous songs, past and present begin to collide: she encounters past lovers, artists, her absent father and, finally, herself.
