Northern Soul is an online magazine written by journalists and arts professionals based in the North which celebrates theatre, music, authors, art and heritage, as well as businesses, entrepreneurs, politics, sport, food, travel and leading figures. Today the team consists of more than 60 professional journalists, multimedia specialists, creatives and photographers whose collective pedigree includes The Times, The Guardian, The Big Issue in the North, the BBC, The Daily Telegraph, The Mail on Sunday, The Independent, Manchester Evening News, the Yorkshire Post, and Huffington Post, to name a few publications. Our goal is to create content that does justice to where we live and to the people who live here. As well as top notch interviewers, photographers and broadcast journalists, we have specialist columnists with individual passions including travel, food, gardening, opera and poetry.
Since launch five years ago, readership has increased dramatically, average time spent reading a page is double the internet average and the site is read around the world.
We believe in talking up to people, not down to them, and we are mustard keen on providing stimulating articles about everything from arts, culture and small businesses, to entrepreneurs, architecture and literature. Our monthly podcast is a magnificent melting pot of exclusive interviews with up-and-coming and established bands as well as 40 minutes of great tunes. And our exclusive photographs show the great and the good in the North of England.
In May 2013, all we had was a belief that there was a demand for great writing and innovative articles about the North of England. Five years on and we’ve been proved right. In that time, we have achieved more than we’d hoped for:
** we’ve grown from a team of two to 60
** our monthly page views are in five figures
** we’ve received coverage in the national media including the BBC and The Guardian
** we’ve built up a global readership
** we’ve appointed, among others, a Theatre Editor, a Comedy Editor, a Liverpool Correspondent, a Poetry Correspondent and an IT Consultant
** we’ve launched a monthly music podcast
** we’ve built up a Twitter following in excess of 11,000
But we are not resting on our laurels. We have a well-read weekly newsletter. We are working continuously to build on our success. We’d love it if you joined us on the journey.
